Slow Cooker French Onion Chicken
If you love classic French onion soup, this version made in the crockpot will blow you away. It has tender chicken breasts, melted cheese and sweet onions tossed in a deliciously flavorful caramelized onion sauce made with greek yogurt and condensed French onion soup.
The best part is it’s made in the slow cooker, so you just toss it in and wait for it to cook. The ingredients are light but rich and the French onion flavors are loud and proud.
โThis, along with my cream of mushroom chicken skillet, is one of my favorite dishes to serve when friends come to visit. I serve it over egg noodles or a bed of white rice and a rocket fennel and pear salad and everyone raves at how good it is and shocked at how easy.
Why you’ll love this recipe
- 31g of protein and only 238 calories per serving.
- Easy way to get the comfort of classic French onion soup in half the time.
Ingredients and Substitutes:
These are the main ingredients and substitutions. See recipe card below for full ingredients list and instructions for crockpot French onion chicken.
- Boneless Skinless Chicken Breasts: chicken thighs or rotisserie chicken.
- Sweet Onion: makes the best caramelized onions. You can use yellow onions but they won’t have the traditional French onion flavor that sweet onions will give.
- Condensed French Onion Soup: cream of chicken soup will also work in a pinch. Both will give the same creaminess but a slightly different flavor.
- Beef Broth: I like using low sodium. You could use chicken broth or vegetable broth but I prefer beef for this recipe.
- Worcestershire Sauce: for its rich flavor. You can substitute with coconut aminos or soy sauce.
- Gruyere Cheese: the traditional French onion soup cheese. Swiss cheese is a great option if you love Swiss.
- Greek Yogurt: this adds richness and creaminess without adding too much fat or calories. Fage non-fat plain Greek yogurt is my favorite because it’s not watery and has the perfect texture. ย
Variations
- Instead of shredding the chicken breast, you can keep them whole, similar to this French onion skillet. Remove the cooked chicken breasts before you add the Greek yogurt. Add yogurt and mix well to combine. Then, place chicken breasts back in the crockpot and serve whole with the cheesy onion sauce on top of the chicken, with a side of crusty bread and veggies.
Dietary Modifications
- For gluten-free, use a gluten-free condensed soup. Also, be sure your Worcestershire is free of gluten, as many contain barley malt vinegar.
- I don’t suggest making this dairy-free. The condensed soup, greek yogurt and gruyรจre cheese are all dairy so it would take a lot of substitutions that would drastically alter the recipe.
How to make this crockpot French onion chicken
Step 1: season chicken and place onions on bottom of the pan
Start by seasoning the chicken breasts on both sides with garlic powder, salt, and black pepper.ย Place the sliced onions at the bottom of the slow cooker. Place chicken breasts on top of the onions.
Step 2: combine onion gravy ingredients
In a medium bowl, combine the condensed French onion soup, beef broth, and Worcestershire sauce. Pour this mixture over the chicken in the slow cooker.
Step 3: cook
Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 5-6 hours or on high for 3-4 hours, until the chicken is fully cooked and the onions are tender.
Step 4: shred
About 15 minutes before you’re ready to serve, shred the chicken by using forks or a meat masher and shred directly in the pot.ย Add the greek yogurt and mix together well until completely melted. Sprinkle the shredded cheese over the top of the chicken and onions. Cover the slow cooker again and let it continue to cook until the cheese is melted and bubbly, usually 2-3ย minutes.ย Once the cheese is melted, serve.
Expert Tip!
Turn this into a gumbo by putting it over white rice with extra salt and pepper. It’s like a delicious French onion jambalaya.
Recipe FAQs
Try it over your favorite pasta noodle for a French onion pasta. Serve as a stand-alone chicken meal along side crusty bread and roasted veggies.ย For a gumbo vibe, serve with white rice. Note, the white rice may bland down the broth a bit so I suggest seasoning it with salt and pepper or sriracha for added flavor.
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 4 days.
Double the beef broth and Worcestershire sauce for a soupy consistency. I like to add the soup to oven-safe ramekins, top it with bread and cheese and broil in the oven for a few minutes until the cheese is bubbly and the bread is crusty.

- Serve with mashed potatoes, over noodles or over rice.ย
- Serve as a standalone chicken meal alongside crusty bread and roasted veggies.ย
- This is one of those tricky ones that I suggest you weigh the final dish (all the food inside the pot) prior to serving. Then divide by the serving size to get your final grams per serving. The reason is the liquid. The weight can vary so much person to person that for the most accurate serving size you really should find the total weight. This crockpot french onion chicken recipe makes 8 servings.ย
Has anyone tried meal prepping this with the starch or veggies? What about freezing?
What is the serving size
This is one I suggest you weigh and divide by servings since it can vary drastically from person to person.
