Ingredients and Substitutes:

Lean Ground Turkey: you can also use lean ground beef, ground chicken, ground sausage or your favorite sausage links. We love Applegate links. 

Sweet Potatoes: the sweet potatoes are the star of the show in this recipe but you can substitute with regular potatoes.

Onion: the onion adds a lot of flavor to this dish. 

Seasoningsthis recipe uses fresh garlic, cinnamon, nutmeg, smoked paprika (I buy this in bulk at Costco), salt and pepper. 

Note on garlic: use either fresh or frozen garlic. If you’ve never tried frozen garlic you will be pleasantly surprised at how convenient it is. I get mine at Target

How to make this turkey sweet potato hash

Step 1

Wash and dry the sweet potatoes and chop into bite sized pieces leaving the skin on. The larger the pieces the longer this will take to cook. I like to cut the potato into 1/2″ rounds and into approximately 8 bite size pieces from each round. This will vary based on the size and shape. 

Step 2

Finely dice your yellow onion and mince garlic. In a pan or cast iron over medium heat add 1 Tbsp. of olive oil, garlic and onion. Cook until fragrant. 

Step 3

Add sweet potatoes to the pan with the garlic and onion, 1/4 cup of water and season with salt and pepper. Stir together well, cover and simmer at medium for 5-7 minutes until the potatoes are tender. Stir the potatoes frequently as they will burn. This however is the best added flavor. 

Step 4

While the potatoes cook, cook the turkey until cooked through in a separate pan over medium heat. 

Step 5

Mix seasonings in a small dish with 1 Tbsp. of water and add to the turkey once fully cooked. Mix to evenly coat the turkey. 

Step 6

Add the turkey to the skillet of potatoes and stir together well to combine. 

Step 7

Serve by itself, with eggs or in a salad. 

Serving size

This turkey sweet potato has makes 6 servings of approximately 160 grams each. As always it is best to weigh your final dish and divide by the number of servings for the most accurate weight per serving.

    This recipe surprised me. I have never liked sweet potatoes with cinnamon, nutmeg, and all that “candied” spice. I took a gamble, made the recipe strictly as dictated, and served with two over easy fried eggs. This was fantastic with the fatty yolk of the egg to cut the sweetness of the potatoes. Super easy to make. I will say the time to cook the potatoes was off mine needed closer to 15 mins to reach tenderness. Since the cut of the potato is subjective ill chalk that up to mine being bigger cuts than used in their test kitchen……no biggie. This reheated wonderfully, as I made this for meal prep Sunday. I will keep this on the menu rotation going forward.

      You’d need to make the recipe in your tracking app as these are specific to turkey but they would be similar!
