Homemade Crispy Air Fryer Chicken Patties
Say hello to the easiest weeknight dinner that even the picky eaters will love. They taste like classic Tyson chicken patties but made with ground chicken, breadcrumbs, simple spices and egg.
These ground chicken patties are a great way to get a fried chicken sandwich feel but with way less oil, breading, and fat. My kids love them, my husband loves them and I can’t get enough. Is there anything better than the entire family agreeing on a meal? I think not.
Serve them with a hamburger buns, cheddar cheese, tomatoes and pickles, or cut them up and add the crispy chicken to your salad or wrap. My favorite way is on their own, hot out of the air fryer, with a side of cottage cheese ranch dressing and sugar-free bbq sauce.

Ingredients and Substitutions
These are the main ingredients and substitutions for this air fryer crispy chicken patties. See the recipe card below for the full ingredients list and instructions.
- Ground Chicken: ground turkey also works but I prefer to use chicken for these.
- Italian Seasoned Breadcrumbs: you’ll use bread crumbs twice, once in the ground chicken mixture and again to coat the patties. This is how you get super golden brown crispy patties. You can use plain Panko breadcrumbs but I love the Italian breadcrumbs are pre-seasoned and add so much flavor.
- Egg: binds everything together.
- Liquid Smoke: hickory flavor.
- Spicy Brown Mustard: gives these a little kick. You can use regular mustard or Worcestershire sauce, if preferred.
- Milk: any type of milk.
Variations
- Serve with your favorite dipping sauce, like cottage cheese ranch dressing or sugar-free bbq sauce.
- For chicken nuggets, make these into the size of a small meatball and flatten slightly. Roll in the breadcrumbs and air fry.
- Make smaller patties for sliders!
Dietary Modifications
- To make gluten-free, use a gluten-free breadcrumb.
- For dairy-free, use a breadcrumb without any dairy. Most Italian seasoned breadcrumbs have dairy.
- To lower the carbs, omit the second breadcrumb coating. Note, this is what makes them deliciously crispy and are well worth it!
How to make these homemade chicken patties in the air fryer (a visual step-by-step guide):
Step 1: make your chicken patties
In a large bowl add the ground chicken, beaten egg, liquid smoke, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, black pepper, mustard and milk (image 1). Combine with your hands to evenly mix everything together (image 2).
Split into 4 balls, approximately 150g each. Flatten into patties and lightly presh a hole, not going all the way through the patty, into the center using a thumb (image 3). Add the remaining ยฝ cup ยฝ cup Italian seasoned breadcrumbs to a shallow bowl and coat each patty in the crumbs on all sides (image 4).
Step 2: air fry
Place chicken patties in the air fryer basket in a single layer and spray the tops with olive oil spray or avocado spray and cook at 390 degrees Fahrenheit for 5 minutes (image 5). Flip, spray the tops and cook for an additional 4 minutes (image 6).
Expert Tip!
Don’t skip the hole in the center! This keeps them from shrinking so they fit on your buns.

I love making these into sandwiches or burgers with all the toppings like lettuce, tomato, pickles and onions. You can add to salads or wraps or just eat as is, dipped in homemade bbq sauce or cottage cheese ranch dressing.
Bake at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for approx. 15-20 minutes or until cooked through and no longer pink.
