This dragon fruit smoothie is the best afternoon pick-me-up. The frozen banana and dragon fruit give the smoothie a creamy texture while the tropical flavor of pineapple adds natural sweetness.

Smoothies are awesome because you can do whatever you want with them and they’ll be delicious. This smoothie has the perfect flavor, texture and consistency as written, but add or take away fruits to your liking, I sure won’t stop ya.

We’re just adding a touch of protein because I wanted the combination of dragon fruit, frozen banana and pineapple to really pop and protein powder tends to mask these beautiful flavors. Feel free to add more or try my chocolate protein smoothie, which was designed with high protein in mind.

What is dragon fruit?

If you haven’t tried dragon fruit, now’s your chance! It’s filled with vitamin c, antioxidants and the pink varieties have a beautiful vibrant color that makes the cutest smoothie ever. Be careful though, the juice does stain your hands!

This exotic fruit has a mild taste so it’s best paired with sweeter fruits like pineapple, mangos, banana, etc. You can buy it fresh, cut it up and then freeze it or if you don’t feel like doing all that, your grocery store will likely have it in the frozen section.

Why you’ll love this recipe

  • Quick and easy afternoon snack.
  • Great way to get your daily dose of fruits.
  • Swap fruits for a fun new version every time.

Ingredients and Substitutions

These are the main ingredients and substitutions for this dragon fruit smoothie recipe. See the recipe card below for the full ingredients list and instructions.

Frozen pineapple, banana, dragon fruit, almond milk, protein powder and lime juice for smoothies.
  • Frozen Dragon Fruit: white dragon fruit or pink dragon fruit. You can buy frozen dragonfruit in the freezer section.
  • Frozen Pineapple: in your grocery freezer section.
  • Frozen Banana: the riper the banana the sweeter the smoothie will be.
  • Unsweetened Almond Milk: coconut milk, plant-based milk, oat milk, etc.
  • Lime Juice: adds some acidity.

Variations

  • For a very sweet smoothie, use pineapple juice or orange juice in place of almond milk.
  • Add a 1/2 scoop of unsweetened protein powder for a boost of protein. Note, the more you use the more it will hide the tropical flavors of the fruits. You can also try vanilla flavored powder, if you love vanilla.
  • Make this into smoothie bowls by adding granola, chia seeds or hemp hearts, fresh tropical fruit, and honey.

Dietary Modifications

  • This recipe is both dairy and gluten-free as long as your protein powder is!

Recipe FAQs

How should I store leftovers?

If you need to store it for a day or two, you can refrigerate this smoothie in an airtight container. For longer storage (up to 3 months), freeze in an airtight container or reusable freezer bag. To defrost, place the frozen smoothie in the refrigerator overnight for a ready-to-drink smoothie in the morning. Or, defrost for a few hours in the refrigerator, then blend.

Where can I find dragon fruit?

Fresh dragon fruit availability will vary depending on where you live. In the US, look for grocery stores that have a good selection of tropical fruits. Frozen dragon fruit is also available in the freezer section of many stores, such as Target. It may be labeled as “pitaya.”

What does dragon fruit taste like?

Dragon fruit has a mildly sweet taste that is often described as somewhere between a kiwi and a pear. Because of its mild taste, it benefits from being combined with more flavorful fruits like pineapple and lime.

Can I replace the banana in this smoothie?

Bananas create a creamy texture and add some sweetness, however if you don’t like bananas or can’t eat them, you could instead use avocado, rolled oats, or another fruit. If you use avocado or rolled oats, you won’t have the sweetness of bananas, so you may wish to add another sweetener such as dates or agave.

Can I use frozen dragon fruit puree instead of cubes?

Sure, if it’s easier to get frozen puree packets, you can use one 100-gram packet in this recipe.

Can I add fresh dragon fruit directly to this smoothie?

Using frozen fruit creates a thick texture, so I recommend cutting and freezing all your fruit before adding it to your smoothie. You can use fresh fruit, but your smoothie won’t be as thick and creamy.

Should I use white or pink dragon fruit?

There are different types of dragon fruit, but the white varieties tend to have a milder taste than the pink and red varieties. I recommend using pink or red dragon fruit because of the stronger flavor and brighter color! (Keep in mind that both the white and pink varieties have pink skin and look similar from the outside; check the signs or labeling in the store to find out whether the dragon fruit is white or pink inside).
