This strawberry protein shake is a delicious way to cure post-workout fatigue. Made with vanilla protein powder, frozen strawberries and cottage cheese, this smoothie is everything protein shakes should be: ice cold, creamy and filling. I love making my own protein shakes at home and this one hits the spot every single time!

Ingredients and Substitutions:

These are the main ingredients and substitutions for this strawberry cheesecake smoothie. See recipe card below for full ingredients list and instructions.

A flat lay of labeled ingredients for a strawberry protein shake: vanilla extract, honey, frozen strawberries, cottage cheese, vanilla protein powder, and almond milk on a light green background.
  • Vanilla Protein Powder: PEScience Gourmet Vanilla is my go-to, use coder OHSNAP to save. You can use any high quality protein but use one you love the taste and texture of – it matters!
  • Low-Fat Cottage Cheese: full-fat for a richer smoothie. You can also use plain Greek yogurt, too.
  • Frozen Strawberries: frozen keeps this nice and cold. If using fresh, I suggest freezing them before adding to your smoothie, rather than adding ice, which can make this to watery. If you don’t have a great blender, use strawberry puree you can buy at the grocery store, that will already be pulverized and easier to blend.
  • Vanilla Extract
  • Unsweetened Vanilla Almond Milk: for extra protein, use low-fat grade a milk or ultra-filtered milk if you are sensitive to dairy.
  • Honey: optional, to sweeten it a bit. You can also use artificial sweeteners, like monk fruit juice concentrate or stevia leaf extract.

Variations

Dietary Modifications

  • I prefer to use a milk protein concentrate because it blends nicely in a smoothie but you can use a dairy-free protein powder and a plant based yogurt, for a dairy-free smoothie.
  • This recipe is gluten-free, as is.

How to make this strawberry protein shake (a step-by-step visual guide):

Expert Tip!

If you don’t have a great blender, use strawberry puree you can buy at the grocery store, that will already be pulverized and easier to blend.

Recipe FAQs

Do I have to use cottage cheese?

The cottage cheese adds a lot of protein while giving it a richer constancy. You can’t taste it, I promise. If you prefer, you can use Greek yogurt in its place.
