Cottage Cheese Avocado Crema
No taco Tuesday is complete with this delicious avocado crema sauce! Made with fresh ingredients like avocado, cottage cheese, lime juice, and garlic, this easy recipe requires minimal effort and is a great way to add flavor and richness to your favorite tacos.
This crema is not just for tacos; it is perfect as a salad dressing. I love prepping a big batch of ground turkey, ground beef or ground chicken taco meat, seasoned with my sugar-free taco seasoning, and turning it into salads all week long with this crema and salsa. You can adjust the consistency with milk, almond milk, water,r and extra lime juice.
Add your simple 5-minute avocado lime crema on air fryer shrimp tacos, baked chicken tacos, breakfast burrito bowls or lazy enchiladas.

Ingredients and Substitutions:
These are the main ingredients and substitutions for this avocado crema recipe. See the recipe card below for the full ingredient list and instructions.
- Avocados: the key to perfect flavor and a creamy texture is a ripe avocado. Ripe avocados will feel soft when gently pressed but should never feel mushy or have dents.
- Cottage Cheese: I used low-fat cottage cheese. You can use full-fat for a richer flavor but with the richness of the avocados, it really doesn’t need it. You can also use plain Greek yogurt. I suggest a low-fat or full-fat Greek yogurt for a creamy consistency as non-fat yogurt tends to be watery.
- Fresh Lime Juice: freshly squeezed for the best flavor. You can also use fresh lemon juice, although I prefer avocados paired with fresh limes.
- Fresh Cilantro
- Garlic Powder: or a fresh garlic clove. If using fresh, mince the garlic before adding to a blender.
- Milk: any type of milk. This is used to give the crema a thinner consistency. You can also use a little water but I much prefer the richness of milk.
Variations
- To make this into a thinner crema to use as a salad dressing, add more milk until it reaches the desired consistency.
- If you want more chunky and thick consistency, mash everything with a fork instead of blending. This will make it into more a chunky dipping sauce, perfect for sheet pan fajitas or air fryer mini tacos.
Dietary Modifications
- This recipe is gluten-free, as is.
- To make this dairy-free you can swap the cottage cheese with silken tofu or a dairy-free yogurt or cottage cheese alternative.
How to make this creamy avocado sauce (a step-by-step visual guide):
Step 1: blend
Add the avocado, cottage cheese, lime juice, cilantro, salt and garlic to a high-speed blender or mini food processor (image 1). Blend for 5 minutes, and add 1 Tbsp. of milk at a time until you reach your desired consistency (image 2). Add a sprinkle of flaky sea salt before serving.
Expert Tip!
To ripen an avocado overnight, put it in a brown paper bag with an apple or a banana. The gas produced will help speed up the ripening process.
Recipe FAQs
Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 2 days. Avocados turn brown quickly so I usually suggest eating it right away, but the lime juice will help preserve it for a day or two.
Serve this with blackened chicken tacos, lazy enchiladas, breakfast burrito bowls or any chicken taco meat.
A ripe avocado will feel soft to the touch but never mushy or have dents. If it’s hard to the touch, it’s not ripe yet and will take 3-4 days to ripen.
