Ingredients and Substitutes:

These are the main ingredients and substitutions. See recipe card below for full ingredients list and instructions for Air Fryer Teriyaki Chicken.

Chicken Breast: you can use any chicken breast. Chicken tenderloins, chicken breast, chicken cutlets or even thighs.

Coconut Aminos: this recipe calls for coconut aminos. I prefer aminos to soy sauce as it’s less salty to taste. You can also use soy sauce or tamari as a substitute.

Toasted Sesame Oil: both toasted and regular will work in this recipe. I prefer the flavor of toasted.

Lite Maple Syrup: if you do not want to use lite syrup you can use regular pancake syrup, 100% maple syrup or honey.

Tapioca Flour: to thicken the sauce I am using tapioca flour. You can use corn starch, arrowroot or you’re preferred thickener. Mix it with water to dissolve prior to adding to the sauce.

How to make air fryer teriyaki chicken:

Step 1: Cook the Chicken

Preheat the air fryer. Chop the chicken into bite size pieces. Season with salt and pepper. Add the chicken to the basket of the air fryer and cook at 380 degrees Fahrenheit for 10 minutes until cooked through.

Step 2: Make the Sauce

In a mason jar or sealed top container, add all the sauce ingredients except the tapioca flour and water and shake well the combine.

Step 3: Thicken the Sauce

Add the sauce to a pan over medium heat on the stove. While the sauce begins to simmer add tapioca flour and water to a small bowl and mix together well. Add the the sauce and bring to a boil.

Step 4: Add the Chicken

Whisk the sauce while it boils to thicken. Once the sauce has thickened add the cooked chicken from the air fryer.

Step 5: Serve

Mix together and top with chopped green onions and toasted sesame seeds. Serve with rice or steamed vegetables.

Sauce TIP ..

Do not add the juice from the air fryer. If you dump it into the sauce your sauce will not be thick and you will need to add additional tapioca flour to get the sauce thickened back up. I would suggest you remove the chicken from the air fryer with tongs and add to the sauce so that it stays nice and sticky and thick.
