Lavash pizza slices topped with grilled chicken, onions, and herbs, drizzled with white sauce. Arranged on parchment with small bowls of herbs and sauce beside a pizza cutter.

If you love thin crust pizza, this bbq chicken lavash pizza is calling your name. Made with frozen chicken, shredded cheeses and a flavorful ranch bbq combo, it doesn’t get much easier or more delicious, than this. Throw on the toppings, toss it in the oven and enjoy.

I love using lavash bread because it’s low in calories and makes a perfect pizza base. I love this with bbq chicken but there’s no wrong way when it comes to pizza so get creative.

My kids keep it traditional with marinara sauce, mozzarella and pepperoni but I also love to get funky with pesto sauce, goat cheese and spinach. Try air fryer tortilla pizzas if you don’t have lavash on hand.

Ingredients and Substitutions:

These are the main ingredients and substitutions for this lavash pizza recipe. See the recipe card below for the full ingredient list and instructions.

Ingredients for Lavash Pizza are laid out on a speckled countertop. Included are lavash bread, cheddar and mozzarella cheese, blackened chicken, red onion, BBQ sauce, cilantro, and ranch dressingโ€”each meticulously placed in separate bowls or plates.
  • Joseph’s Lavash Bread: this whole wheat lavash bread is low calorie and makes the perfect crispy pizza crust. If thin-crust pizza isn’t your thing, you can use a soft flatbread or pita bread as the base of the pizza.
  • Cheddar Cheese and Low Moisture Mozzarella Cheese: use your favorite combo of cheese. I like feta cheese, goat cheese and Monterey Jack cheese, as well.
  • Blackened Chicken Strips: I went with store-bought frozen sliced chicken but you can make your own air fryer blackened chicken.
  • Red Onion: slice these thin so you don’t have huge chunks of onion. I also love adding caramelized onions. You can find instructions on how to easily caramelize onions using my French onion skillet recipe.
  • Yogurt Ranch Dressing: I used Bolthouse Farms but if you want to make your own, try my dairy-free ranch dressing.
  • BBQ Sauce: I used Sweet Baby Rays No Sugar Added BBQ Sauce. Make your own using this sugar-free bbq sauce recipe.

Variations

  • Make this into a Mediterranean style pizza using feta cheese, cherry tomatoes or sun-dried tomatoes, kalamata olives and red pepper.
  • Add a drizzle of balsamic glaze for a little sweetness to complement the tangy bbq and rich ranch.
  • Add a sprinkle of parmesan cheese, chili flakes and green onions prior to serving.

Dietary Modifications

  • For gluten-free, use a gluten-free pizza dough, wrap or tortilla.
  • For dairy-free, use a dairy-free cheese alternative. Note, these tend to melt differently than dairy cheese, so keep that in mind.
  • To make this lower-fat, use reduced fat cheese.

How to make this BBQ chicken lavash flatbread pizza recipe:

Step 1: preheat and prep lavash

Preheat oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit. You can pre-crisp your lavash by putting it in the oven on a baking sheet or pizza stone for 5 minutes, once the oven has heated.

Step 2: build pizza

Place lavash on a baking sheet (image 1) and spread the BBQ on to coat evenly (image 2). I like to bring it about 1/4 inch away from the edges of the lavash. Top with 1/2 of both cheeses (image 3), chopped chicken and onion. Top with the remaining cheese (image 4), this helps hold the toppings down.

Uncooked rectangular lavash pizza dough rests on a baking sheet. A layer of tomato sauce is spread evenly, followed by a sprinkle of shredded cheese. Toppings like chicken, onions, and peppers add the final touch to this delectable creation.

Step 3: bake

Bake for 5 minutes until the cheese has melted. Broil at the end to get golden brown crispy edges (image 5). Be careful not to burn. Drizzle with ranch and top with fresh cilantro.

Recipe FAQs

How do I store leftover pizza?

These are best when eaten right away, as the cooked lavash doesn’t taste the same once reheated. I suggest storing leftover toppings separately and assembling when ready to enjoy.

Can I use something other than lavash as the base of my pizza?

Of course! You can use tortillas, pita bread or regular pizza dough. I love lavash because it’s low calorie and resembles thin crust pizza but you can use anything you want as the base.

Do these instructions work for different pizzas?

Yes! Use this recipe as an example on how to make your favorite pizzas. You can use pesto sauce, marinara sauce, tomato sauce, white sauce etc. Add your favorite cheese and favorite toppings and bake as instructed.

Can I make these in the toaster oven?

Yes! Bake as instructed in the toaster oven, as well.
